2007 Gravner Ribolla
I feel as though I'm not worthy/competent to even comment on the wines of Josko Gravner - based in Venezia Guilia on the border of Italy and Solvenia (apocryphally the winery sits on the boarder of both countries). These are orange wines made with Ribolla Gialla (but in actual fact variety here is less important than method) - the wines are made in amphora buried under the ground, then aged in barrel for a further six years before being bottled. The 2008 is the current vintage. This is in stark contrast to many of the orange / amber wines produced in the new world which are released young and designed to drink young. Just like a red wine of distinction and 8 years aging the tannins have integrated into the wine which is brilliant, intense and aromatic. This is the ne plus ultra of amber wine.
