2009 Jean Milan Symphorine Grande Cru Champange
Just wow! Established in 1864 the Milan started as growers for the likes of Krug, y'know - noone important. Today the wines are made by Caroline and come from the Milan family 6ha as well as the same amount of fruit bought from friends and family. The wines are all Blanc de Blanc (that is, 100% Chardonnay) and have the nerve, tension, and intensity of BdB at its best. They are highly rated (92 Points - Wine Advocate, 91 Points - Wine Spectator, Top 50 Wines of 2015 - VIVA) but more importantly to us they are admired by those whose palates align with ours; Terry Theise says of the wines, "They have that pencil-y minerality beneath the loveliest imaginable fruit. They are truly exquisite wines. Just don’t miss them. Prices are amazingly reasonable and availability is better than you’d expect from a small domaine."
If you want to experience truly fine Champagne, this is as good as it gets under $100 a bottle.
