2010 Xanadu Chardonnay
This could well be one of the most stunning Chardonnays Australia produces for under $50. Margaret River is undoubtedly Australia's Chardy capital (it also produces refined Cabernet) but lots of the wines, especially the most expensive, are unwieldy and over the top. Not so Xanadu - established at the same time as Moss Wood, Leeuwin Estate and Cullen, this producer sadly fell into ignominy in the 90’s but has since been resurrected by the Rathbone Wine Group who own other historical wineries Yering Station and Mount Langi Ghiran. This is an elegant, expressive Chardonnay with crispness balancing deft use of oak and just enough bottle age to let the secondary characters shine.
