2014 Mount Edward Gruner Veltliner
Mount Edward are not only some of the most consistent Pinot producers in Central Otago but are also superstar (and relatively under the radar) white wine producers. I don’t have a lot of patience for the lack of understanding most winemakers in New Zealand have for ‘alternative’ varieties but Duncan Forsyth manages to create absolutely stunning Albarinos, Pinot Blancs and Gruner Veltliner from various sites around Central. For those not in the know, Gruner is an Austrian variety that I describe as half Sauvignon Blanc/half Riesling and all charm, with a white pepper note and savouriness. This wine hits all marks: clean, focused and refreshing. It manages to be at one a pure expression of Gruner varietal character and a unmistakably Loburn (where the vineyard it comes from is planted) wine.
