2015 The Prospect Chardonnay
Steve Voysey of Spade Oak moved to Gisborne to help establish Montana wine program in the region and was instrumental in the creation of the famous Montana P and O wines. When the winery was sold Steve took a job with Indevin and as well as producing wine under contract also produces his own wines. The Spade Oak wines are stunning expressions of Gisborne and I am a huge fan of some of the more experimental such as the Saint Laurent. The Prospect is not labelled with the Spade Oak brand, instead it bears Steve’s name and signature. It is Chardonnay sourced from the Ormond and Patutahi vineyards and in my mind is among the most complete, pure, individual chardonnays NZ has ever produced. It is not trying to ape Burgundy (less creative palates would describe the wine as Chablisienne) but is uniquely Gisbone. Vibrant, juicy, intense fruit is given richness by a hint of oak (which I think will come out over time). It is pure, focused and truly beautiful.
