2016 Ash Ridge Syrah
Ash Ridge, located in Hawkes Bay's Bridge Pa Triangle and one of the quiet over-achievers of the new wave of HB winemaking. Established in 2005 they have been consistent performers winning numerous high scores, trophies and other awards most notably Winery of the Year at the Hawkes Bay Wine Awards in 2014 and Lauren Swift their winemaker winning NZ Young Winemaker of the Year in 2015. The wines themselves are understated, packed full of flavour and incredibly stylish. Their 2016 Estate Syrah happens to be one of the absolute best HB Syrahs under the $25 mark.
It is silky smooth with vibrant red and black fruit, it has beautiful primary fruit which makes it drinkable right now but enough concentration and complexity wrapped up in layers of pepper, musk, violets and dried herbs to be an extremely rewarding wine over the next 5 - 8 years.
