2015 Dirtoir #1 ‘Upper Moutere Pinot Noir’
This is a Pinot Noir from an organic vineyard in the Upper Moutere above Nelson. It was made in a very hands off fashion (no fining, no filtration, no additions and indigenous ferment) by Alex of Don and Kindeli wines who is based in the Wairarapa. We tasted this wine in barrel and fell in love, luckily there were approximately 150l (200 bottles) from a single barrel that were not needed for the blend this wine was originally destined for. Needless to say we snapped it up and Alex kindly put it in a bottle for us. It was finished with only the bare minimum of sulfur (25 ppm).
The wine itself is lithe and medium weight with typically Moutere notes of red plum and white cherry enhanced by fine grained tannins and bright acidity. It has a seamlessness enhanced by the stony minerality and while it is ready to drink now it will improve with age.
