2016 Erste + Neue Pinot Grigio
Italian Pinot Grigio is an oft-maligned style of Pinot Gris; partly because much of it these days (as is the case for a number of similar styles such as Soave are made in such vast industrial quantities that the names are now synonymous with bland and boring. Not so this gem from Erste + Neue in Alto Adige, the most northern province in Italy which incidentally shares both most of its border and its native tongue (German) with Austria. Erste + Neue translates roughly to ‘first + new’... this is the kinda wine we are all about. This wine is an incredibly delicate Grigio with salty fresh fruit notes and clean acidity balanced against nice weight. It's a fantastic counterpoint and challenge to a lot of bland Pinot Gris the world over and is an amazing food wine.
