2015 Petane Station Pinot Gris
What is NZ Pinot Gris? That's a tough question to answer but I think we are finally starting to find our feet. To me, it is a balance between the crispness and freshness of Pinot Grigio, the richness of weight of Alsatian Pinot Gris (see below) incorporating the vibrancy of fruit and flavour definition that has made NZ stand out on the world scene. I don’t think I can think of any better wine to demonstrate this than the Petane Station Pinot Gris from Esk Valley in the north of Hawkes Bay. Petane are a specialist aromatic variety producer in Chardonnay and Red territory but they manage to create wines of poise, balance and vibrancy. This wine is dry but rich, with creamy custard apple and pear notes a hint of aromatic christmas spice and a clean, fresh finish.
